Acute poliomyelitis

    2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Non-Billable/Non-Specific Code
  • A80 should not be used for reimbursement purposes as there are multiple codes below it that contain a greater level of detail.
  • The 2022 edition of ICD-10-CM A80 became effective on October 1, 2021.
  • This is the American ICD-10-CM version of A80 - other international versions of ICD-10 A80 may differ.
Type 1 Excludes
Type 1 Excludes Help
A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes. It means "not coded here". A type 1 excludes note indicates that the code excluded should never be used at the same time as A80. A type 1 excludes note is for used for when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition.

Clinical Information
  • Acute infectious disease of humans, particularly children, caused by any of three serotypes of human poliovirus; infection is usually limited to the gastrointestinal tract and nasopharynx, and is often asymptomatic; the central nervous system, primarily the spinal cord, may be affected, leading to rapidly progressive paralysis, coarse fasciculation and hyporeflexia; motor neurons are primarily affected and encephalitis may also occur; replicates in the nervous system, and may cause significant neuronal loss, most notably in the spinal cord.
  • An acute infectious disease of humans, particularly children, caused by any of three serotypes of human poliovirus (poliovirus). Usually the infection is limited to the gastrointestinal tract and nasopharynx, and is often asymptomatic. The central nervous system, primarily the spinal cord, may be affected, leading to rapidly progressive paralysis, coarse fasciculation and hyporeflexia. Motor neurons are primarily affected. Encephalitis may also occur. The virus replicates in the nervous system, and may cause significant neuronal loss, most notably in the spinal cord. A rare related condition, nonpoliovirus poliomyelitis, may result from infections with nonpoliovirus enteroviruses. (from Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp764-5)
  • An acute infectious disorder that affects the nervous system. It is caused by the poliovirus. The virus spreads by direct contact, and can be prevented by prophylaxis with the polio vaccine.
