Clinical Information
  • A mobile u-shaped bone that lies in the anterior part of the neck at the level of the third cervical vertebrae. The hyoid bone is suspended from the processes of the temporal bones by ligaments, and is firmly bound to the thyroid cartilage by muscles.
  • A non-neoplastic or neoplastic disorder that affects the trachea. Representative examples of non-neoplastic disorders include congenital malformations and infection. Representative examples of neoplastic disorders include carcinoma and lymphoma.
  • A u-shaped bone supporting the tongue. This bone is located at the base of the tongue and is suspended from the tips of the styloid processes of the temporal bones by the stylohyoid ligaments.
  • Condition in which there is a deviation from or interruption of the normal structure or function of the larynx.
  • Pathological processes involving any part of the larynx which coordinates many functions such as voice production, breathing, swallowing, and coughing.
  • The largest cartilage of the larynx consisting of two laminae fusing anteriorly at an acute angle in the midline of the neck. The point of fusion forms a subcutaneous projection known as the adam's apple.
  • Your trachea, or windpipe, is one part of your airway system. Airways are pipes that carry oxygen-rich air to your lungs. They also carry carbon dioxide, a waste gas, out of your lungs. When you inhale, air travels from your nose, through your larynx, and down your windpipe. The windpipe splits into two bronchi that enter your lungs.problems with the trachea include narrowing, inflammation, and some inherited conditions. You may need a procedure called a tracheostomy to help you breathe if you have swallowing problems, or have conditions that affect coughing or block your airways. You might also need a tracheostomy if you are in critical care and need to be on a ventilator.
